Okay, admittedly I probably have an excess of energy at times, but definitely not 100% of the time or always when I need it. If that were the case, there wouldn’t be coffee, energy drinks, or afternoon naps. However, there is something else that can help…

And for those of you who are skeptical about essential oils (my brother included), it really works! I use this on the days when I know I’m going to need a little extra boost of, well, energy but I don’t like to fill my belly full of caffeine. Not to mention, as a self-diagnosed, partial insomniac, this always makes an appearance following the nights when I can only seem to toss and turn.

En-R-Gee increases alertness and vitality. It’s a blend of rosemary, juniper, lemongrass, nutmeg, Idaho balsam fir, clove, and black pepper. All of these combined create an amazing blend that stimulates the mind and body, increasing energy in every system. It increases blood circulation, which also helps awaken the mind and elevates mental abilities.

 I like to diffuse this with a little bit of Wintergreen, which is also used to stimulate and increase awareness in all levels of the sensory system. Those two combined do wonders for me when I’m in need of a boost!

Essential Oil Blends

While there are many different brands of essential oils, I prefer Young Living oils. One of the bonuses of ordering from YL is that they not only have the single oils, like the ones we’ve touched on so far, but also oil blends that are already put together for specific purposes and uses. One of my absolute favorites is the Stress Away blend!

Stress Away is a wonderfully aromatic blend of cedarwood, copaiba, lavender, lime, ocotea, and vanilla. This blend can be diffused or applied directly to the neck, temples, and wrists for the best results. Stress Away can benefit both adults and children, bringing a feeling of peace and tranquility to help relieve daily stress and nervous tension.

Each oil in the blend offers unique properties. For example, lime is known for it’s ability to purify and renew the spirit. Cedarwood is very stabilizing and grounding. Lavendar improves concentration and mental acuity. Copaiba has a hypnotic-like effect and can work as a sedative to the nervous system. But these are only a few of the benefits from this fragrant concoction.

I use this oil every morning, every night before bed, and as often as I need to in between! I love the immediate calming response that my mind and body have when I use it, but also love the scent so much that I sometimes wear it as my perfume! So I guess I’m a walking stress reliever?

Front and Center: Cedarwood

I have to say, this essential oils series has helped me better understand the extensive benefits of each oil. The more I read, the more I love being able to use natural ways to stay healthy! Next in the lineup: Cedarwood. I’ve mainly used cedarwood as a sleep aid, but will definitely be incorporating it into other areas now that I know what else it can do!

Cedarwood essential oil is good for hair loss, a healthy respiratory system, promoting clear skin, relief from UTI pain, as a sleep aid, and is recognized for its grounding and calming affect on the nervous system.

For respiratory health, diffusing cedarwood  or rubbing some between your hands and inhaling the scent can help alleviate asthma or congestion and coughs.

Adding cedarwood to coconut oil and massaging it into the scalp can stimulate better blood circulation, thereby promoting hair growth. Not only that, but the antibacterial qualities in cedarwood can help keep hair follicles clean so healthy hair can continuously grow.

Cedarwood stimulates the pineal glad and releases melatonin, which induces fatigue and restorative sleep. Cedarwood also helps calm the nervous system and is helpful to those who suffer from chronic anxiety, depression, and stress. It is a wonderfully soothing aroma to use during a massage to help you relax right before bed. A great sleep lotion can be created by adding equal parts lavender and cedarwood with a few drops of orange essential oil. Mixing these with a base oil and rubbing it on the bottoms of the feet and back of the neck will help those who suffer from insomnia or other sleep issues.

Now, unless I wanted to write a novella each time I posted about an essential oil, there’s no way I can get all of the amazing information for each one. These posts are here to provide a little insight into each one, leading you to do some extra reading on the oils that strike your fancy.

The Essence of Lemons

In these first posts during our essential oils exploration, I’m focusing on the oils that are more widely used and well known. Once we get through a few more I’m going to start introducing essential oils that aren’t as mainstream but are hidden gems to aid with personal health and wellness.

Now, lemons! Lemons and lemon scents are used almost everywhere with many different beneficial properties. Lemon essential oil is no different. It can be used for so many different things that you should always have a backup bottle on hand!

Lemon oil is a natural cleanser, both for body and household care. By nature, lemon detoxifies and its antiseptic properties can help treat various skin disorders, including acne. It reduces excess oil on the skin and helps remove dead skin cells. (Use caution when adding any citrus oil to a skin care regiment as it can cause sensitivity to sunlight.)

Adding two drops of lemon oil to an 8oz glass of water is a gentle and natural way to cleanse the digestive system, kidneys, and liver. Lemon is very helpful with stomach problems (cramps, indigestion, upset stomach, etc.) and because of its high vitamin content, helps to boost the immune system. Oh, and remember how honey is a natural cough suppressant? Adding lemon oil to warm water and stirring in some honey will help relieve a sore throat and reduce coughing.

Inhaling diffused lemon oil can also clear nasal passages and sinuses, which promotes good air flow and steady breathing for those who may suffer from asthma or seasonal allergies.

Not only that, but spritzing your hair with a little bit of lemon mixed in a water bottle will give your hair extra shine, reduce dandruff, and add natural highlights when out in the sun!

Lemon essential oil is very beneficial for increasing concentration and alertness. I use lemon as the main oil in a concentration blend I put together for my kids when they’re at school or studying at home. My son’s teacher chuckled and told me how cute it was that he carries his small bottles of essential oil blends in his pocket! Being both calming and uplifting by nature, it’s the perfect oil with which to begin your day. It helps eliminate anxiety, exhaustion, mental fatigue, and nervousness, thereby removing negative emotions and creating a positive mindset.

As if that wasn’t enough, lemon oil is an amazing natural cleaner and disinfectant. With its antibacterial and antifungal properties, lemon oil is a safe and effective way to clean household items. Add lemon oil and vinegar to a spray bottle for an all-purpose natural cleaner.

Phew! After writing all of that (while diffusing my lemon and peppermint blend), I’ve realized that even I’m not taking full advantage of my essential oils! I think I’m going to spend tomorrow doing a lemon cleanse…

Minty Fresh

Peppermint oilPeppermint essential oil is another widely versatile oil and is one of my personal favorites. It is one of the oldest and most highly regarded herbs for soothing digestion. Peppermint is also linked to the brain’s satiety center which triggers a sensation of fullness after meals so it is a natural appetite suppressant!

When used aromatically, it stimulates the mind and helps with mental focus and performance. Peppermint can help lessen headache pain while also awakening the mind and body. I use peppermint in my diffuser first thing every morning get rid of the last remnants of sleepiness and prepare myself for a new day.

When diluted with a base oil and used topically (peppermint is much too strong an oil to apply “neat” directly on the skin) it can help with a large number of physical ailments: arthritis, digestive problems, nausea, respiratory infections, skin conditions (itchy skin, eczema, psoriasis), and viral infections just to name a few.

With so many benefits, this is another essential oil that should be in the top five of anyone’s collection. I use peppermint every single day and always have a backup on hand!

Lavender Just Makes Scents

Alright, let’s talk oils. I decided the first in the series of essential oils exploration should be lavender because of its versatility. Used for relaxation, skin care, treating wounds and almost everything in between, lavender is truly an essential in everyone’s oil collection.

Typically, when thinking of lavender, the calming benefits of aromatherapy come to mind. Lavender oil is known for its ability to relax both the mind and body. It’s used to treat anxiety, depression, and can also improve concentration. Because of lavender’s calming properties, it can be beneficial to those who suffer from sleeplessness and is a stress reliever. It’s safe to say that those are all reason enough to love lavender!

Along with all of that, lavender is very helpful with many different skin conditions. It is useful in treating or reducing acne, eczema, scarring, and stretch marks just to name a few. Adding lavender oil to a skin care regiment will help improve how you look and how you feel. It is because of the anti-bacterial properties that lavender can reduce acne and other skin problems along with reducing wrinkles. It’s probably one of the main ingredients present in the fountain of youth! (Although there’s no scientific proof of that yet…)

Some of the medical benefits lavender carries are antifungal, anti-inflammatory, can reduce cholesterol and high blood pressure, and aid in pain relief. Lavender is one of the few essential oils still used in modern medicine. It can also help with digestion and reduce nausea. And all these things I’ve listed here don’t even cover the full range of lavender’s benefits!

As you can see, this really is a must have oil. Able to be used aromatically or topically, this essential oil should be in everyone’s home. I would venture a guess that most people reading this are aiming for a more holistic lifestyle and being able to use a pure essential oil (not a synthetic blend) for such varied benefits is definitely a step in the right direction.

Scent-sational Essentials

So, what’s the deal with essential oils? My sister-in-law introduced me to them not too long ago and I’ve been hooked ever since. Though I don’t always succeed, I try to stay as holistic as possible when it comes to mind and body care and that was one of the main factors that drew me in. Plus, it didn’t hurt that the first night I used the sleep cream she made me (with lavender, cedarwood, and coconut oil) I slept the entire night instead of tossing and turning for hours on end like I usually do. I woke up refreshed and a believer in the power of essential oils!

The best part is that no matter what ails you, there’s an oil to help! Whether it’s anxiety, a cold or flu, feeling depressed, sleepiness or sleeplessness (my personal problem), sore muscles, or even just plain ol’ stress, there’s an oil for that!

I actually always keep a bottle of Stress Away in my purse in case I need a fast pick-me-up! (Which reminds me, I’m almost out…)

I use my oils in several different ways, by applying it to certain areas on my body directly or with a base oil, diffusing, or simply just opening the bottle and taking a deep breath and letting the aromatherapy do it’s job!

Starting this week, I’m going to choose one oil per post and talk about the benefits of each one. Some, like lavender, are so versatile that it can (and should) be used daily! Others have more specific uses but are just as…well, essential!
